Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession

Minority Counsel Program (MCP)

In May 1988, the Commission sponsored development of a program designed to encourage corporations to retain lawyers of color for legal services. Originally called the Minority Counsel Demonstration Program and later renamed the Minority Counsel Program, which was recently revised and updated. The Minority Counsel Program is designed to provide opportunities for corporations and lawyers of color to develop mutually rewarding business relationships through structured networking.


Minority In-House Counsel Group (MIC)

The MIC group is a national network of minority lawyers that work in corporations and governmental agencies. The Minority In-House Counsel Job Bank allows employers to post job listings that are emailed directly to interested attorneys.


Multicultural Women Attorneys Network (MWAN)

Jointly sponsored with the Commission on Women, MWAN has focused on issues facing minority women lawyers in the profession. Their activities have included roundtable discussions and regional conferences. The Network published the book "Dear Sisters, Dear Daughters: Words of Wisdom from Multicultural Women Attorneys Who've Been There and Done That", and the report "The Burdens of Both, the Privileges of Neither".


Conference of Minority Partners

The ABA Conference of Minority Partners in Majority/Corporate Law Firms is an organization comprised of minority African-American, Hispanic American, Asian Pacific Islander American and American Indian partners in majority/corporate law firms with 25 lawyers or more. The stated purpose of Partners is to foster and promote programs that make minority partners successful. In 1990, Partners published its Directory of Minority Partners in Majority Corporate Law Firms, and the most current edition can be found online.

Spirit of Excellence Awards

The awards luncheon is one of the highlights of the ABA Midyear Meeting celebrating the achievements of minority lawyers. The Spirit of Excellence award recognizes the contributions to the legal profession and to society and are presented to lawyers who excel in their professional settings and who personify excellence on either national, state or local level.


National Conference for the Minority Lawyer

Co-sponsored by the ABA Section of Business Law and the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession, the National Conference for the Minority Lawyer is a unique program for litigators, business lawyers, in-house counsel, solo practitioners, and government lawyers.
